Sacchai

Sacchai

Truth.

A claim should be something a buyer can check.

01

The name

Sacchai (सच्चाई) is Hindi for truth. It means the everyday kind rather than the philosophical kind: whether something is what it says it is. The word describes a quality a thing holds, not a mark stamped on it once and trusted from then on. That difference is the whole program.

02

How it came about

It started with two moments on one trip to India in 2022.

The first came during a cupping at a coffee works. We asked which farm, and which lot, the coffee on the table had come from. The honest answer was that it wasn’t tracked at that level. Nobody was hiding anything; lots were combined and recorded more broadly, as they commonly are. But it meant the origin printed on an eventual bag would rest on someone’s word.

The second had nothing to do with coffee. Staying in plantation country, far from any city, we needed cough syrup for our child. The pharmacy carried none of the names we recognized, and reports of children falling ill from contaminated syrup were still recent. We bought what was on the shelf, with no way to tell whether it was what it claimed to be.

The products were very different, but the gap was the same: a claim with nothing behind it that a buyer could check.

Back home, building a coffee business, we kept hearing the same sentence: these beans come from this farm. There was no way to see the path they had actually taken. Sacchai began there.

The wider question goes back further, to a greenhouse in 2020. The Company →

03

Now

The current work is mapping, lot by lot, where provenance and handling records break apart between farm and cup – and what it would take for them to hold together.

04

Next

Coffee is the first case, not the boundary. Sacchai is being developed toward a platform that producers, processors, roasters, and retailers could build on wherever origin and handling need to be proven, not just stated. We are open to early conversations with prospective pilot partners.
